▎2025 Chiàu-khí-kang: Lukang Street Museum — Project Review
The Chiàu-khí-kang Lukang Arts Festival is a triennial gathering of the local community and a cultural rhythm that responds to everyday life. We constantly ask ourselves: if festivals are not only about festivity, can exhibitions truly amplify the voices of the local people? This year, we chose to make the street itself the protagonist of curation. Under the concept of a “Street Museum,” we turned Lukang’s alleys and avenues into cultural carriers rich with memory, context, and voice—not merely scenic backdrops for tourism.
We stepped into markets, traditional shops, and craft workshops, uncovering the textures of everyday life and listening to the language and rhythms of local artisans. We invited creators, designers, and returning youth to co-translate these local scenes into exhibitions that are understandable, participatory, educational, and regenerative. These actions gradually shape our evolving vision for the future of cultural practice in place.
▎Culture: Curating from Within Everyday Life
The Street Museum is not just a curatorial proposal—it is a series of real, living conversations. Through oral histories, spatial interpretation, and visual storytelling, we brought local stories and old buildings into renewed visibility. What’s more, this year’s curation welcomed Japanese artists to co-create with us, using the exhibition to exchange methods of living and revealing the cultural layers embedded in the streetscape. Each exhibition point became a living site for Taiwan–Japan cultural dialogue, continuing our experiment in cultural education that positions “place as school.”
▎Industry: From Showcasing to Co-Designing with Local Businesses
Exhibitions are not isolated from industry—they are part of a collaborative design process with the local production ecosystem. We invited artisans to share their production narratives, and we transformed the visual design of the exhibition into tools for brand interpretation. From pewterware and pastries, to coffee, curated objects, local ingredients, and traditional craftsmanship, each exhibition site became a co-creation between curators and shop owners. Beyond telling product stories to the public, the process helped deepen local businesses’ understanding of their own brand identity and cultural narrative. In the streets of Lukang, cultural depth and economic resilience are interwoven.
▎People: From Helping Out to Hands-On Cultural Participation
This year’s curatorial execution was accompanied by a volunteer participation program, including pre-event training, guided tours during the exhibition, and interactive design support. Through this process, young people engaged with the action, transitioning from peripheral helpers to cultural participants. More importantly, the hands-on nature of the street exhibition built bridges of trust and understanding between young returnees and local business owners, fostering cross-generational, cross-role collaboration in cultural practice.
▎Co-Creation in the Streets: Growing a Sustainable Cultural Ecosystem
Curation is never a solo act. The content of this year’s exhibition was shaped through dialogue with more than a dozen local shops, workshops, and creators. Every exhibition panel stands as the result of repeated discussions and revisions—proof that Lukang is not merely the subject of curation, but a co-author in the process.
When the relationship between curators and the community is no longer framed as “interviewer and interviewee” or “documenter and documented,” but instead becomes that of collaborative partners “照起工 (chiàu-khí-kang)”—working side by side—the richness of culture becomes something truly rooted in the land, and something worth staying for.
